Northernettes Synchro had quite the season! From earning Team USA honors to capturing gold at the Hevelius Cup, this Twin Cities-area synchronized skating program has been making waves both nationally and internationally. With achievements like these, it's clear there's something special happening on the ice.
We reached out to Alana Christie, Director of Northernettes Synchronized Skating, for more insight into this local skating program that's been turning heads in the synchro world. Check out what she had to say about their approach, their success, and what's next for the Northernettes family!
What makes Northernettes Synchro unique?
What sets Northernettes apart is our commitment to both excellence and empowerment. We’re not just building competitive teams—we’re building confident, compassionate, and resilient young people. Our skaters learn to lead on and off the ice, support each other through challenges, and push the limits of what they’re capable of. With nine teams across various levels, we’re proud of our inclusive, growth-oriented culture that focuses equally on high-level performance and strong character.

What does teamwork mean to you and your team?
Teamwork is everything to us. In synchronized skating, one skater can’t succeed without the others—every step, every breath, every push matters. To our teams, teamwork means trust, communication, and selflessness. It’s showing up not just for yourself, but for your teammates, and knowing they’re doing the same for you. We emphasize accountability and connection because the stronger our bond, the more successful we are.
What has been your biggest challenge/opportunity this season?
One of our biggest challenges—and greatest opportunities - last season was stepping up when it matters most, specifically at the US Synchro National Championships last March. For our juvenile and collegiate teams (looking amazing in their Line Up dresses!!), the pressure was high, the expectations were clear, and the moments were big. But it was in those defining moments that our athletes rose to the occasion and put out incredible performances. We saw incredible grit and focus as they delivered when the stakes were highest, performing under pressure with precision, determination, and heart. The challenge was staying composed and confident in those high-pressure situations, but the opportunity was in proving to themselves and others that they could rise, and they did!

What was your inspiration/concept and how was it incorporated into your
costume, choreography, and music?
For our Juvenile team, we channeled the fun, upbeat vibes that are quintessential J.Lo. We wanted the program to radiate energy and joy—just like her performances. That spirit was reflected in our music selection, which featured bold rhythms and dynamic beats, and the dress was equally eye-catching, with vibrant color, and sleek design elements that captured J.Lo's glamour.
Our Collegiate team took on the wildly entertaining world of Elton John. We leaned into the eccentricity, the boldness, and the electric stage presence he’s known for. The music was a mix of his most iconic hits, stitched together in a way that brought out the emotional highs and the playful energy of his style. The dresses were a show of their own: bold colors, unique patterns, and a touch of sparkle, nodding to Elton’s signature look and fearless fashion.
What are you most excited about for the future of the Northernettes Synchronized Skating program?
The future feels incredibly bright. We’re seeing young skaters grow into leaders, families deeply engaged in our organization, and a community that continues to rally behind us. We're expanding opportunities for travel, training, and teamwork. Watching our skaters develop not just as athletes, but as confident, passionate individuals is the most rewarding part—and we can't wait to see where their journeys take them this season.
