4 Things You Need to Take Advantage of Early Bird Discounts (And It Doesn't Include Your Team Roster!)

Starting early on your custom dance costume design can save you time, stress, and money, but one of the main constraints we hear is, "I don't have my team or money yet!"

No worries, there are ways to get started even without your team assembled or your funds in place for the year.

You can take advantage of early bird savings by getting started with your design and prototype before you have your team or your full funding. Then, when you have your team and funding secured, you can place your full order.

The Wizards & Cavaliers New Senior Dance Teams

Posted by Trista on Feb 5, 2019

Cleveland Cavaliers Senior dance team

The Washington Wizards and the Cleveland Cavaliers have a new addition to their entertainment lineup: senior dance teams!  The teams, aptly named Wizdom and Wine & Goldies,  are made up of dancers 50 years of age or older.  Many of the members have had past careers as dancers and auditioned against 50+ of their peers to make the team.

The Wizards and the Cavaliers join the ranks of the Pelicans, and Golden State Warriors, Bucks, Heat, and Bulls  - all teams that have added senior dance teams in recent years. The new additions have occurred among a trend of more inclusive changes with NBA dance teams.  The Wizards, Raptors, and Spurs have also re-branded their dance teams and now feature co-ed members.  Who says only ladies can dance?!

Check out some photos and videos from the Wizdom and the Wine & Goldies first performances this season!

Photos by Tim McConnell Photography.

The Iowa State Dance and Drill Association Championships were held early last month in Des Moines, Iowa, and we recently got a few photos of the competition from photographer Tim McConnell.

The Iowa State Competition is very different from many state competitions because there are colleges that compete, co-ed categories, production categories, light show categories, and more, in addition to the traditional dance team categories. So cool to see such a variety in one competition!

Check out a few of the teams we were lucky to have outfitted for the tournament, below!

How to Estimate the Number of Rhinestones for Your Dance Costume

Posted by Trista on Sep 14, 2017

dance costume rhinestone estimator

Rhinestones are the perfect finishing touch to any costume, but often the biggest question we hear is: how many rhinestones do I need? It's a tough question to figure out especially when:

  • 100 gems sounds like a lot, but is actually on the low end of the price spectrum,
  • Design illustrations can be poor representations of a finished rhinestone design because it's difficult to represent gem size and placement accurately,
  • Minor tweaks in spacing can drastically effect the quantity of rhinestones.
If you're trying to figure out the number of rhinestones you need for your next dance costume, check out these 4 easy methods, below!

Team Spotlight: 2017 National Champions - Louisville Ladybirds Dance Team

Posted by Trista on Jun 16, 2017

The Louisville Ladybirds this past fall on gameday in the 202-7 Mesh Sublimated Top.

Louisville Ladybird Dance Team- National Champs!

It's hard to deny the Louisville Ladybird Dance Team's presence.  The team has won 9 out of the last 10 national titles at the NDA Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship, and has 14 national titles overall.   Walking into competition, their reputation precedes them!

Their team dynamic is unique because they have quite a large team, are co-ed, and have a very strong work ethic. "They don't stop until they have mastered their choreography and skills. They don't settle or rest for good enough, they are always pushing to be better," said TRIBE 99.  So it's no surprise this hard work pays off at competition.

Led by Cheryl Knight and Todd Sharp, the team performs at football games in addition to competing in the Dance Team Performance and Hip Hop 1A division this past spring at NDA.   You can also catch Todd Sharp and the team on their new show "So Sharp," premiering July 26 on Lifetime! Here's a peek at the team's performance and dance costumes this past season!

What's That Job: Costume Fit Models Pam and Taylor

Posted by Trista on Jun 12, 2017

Dance Costume Model | New Product

Costume fit model Taylor tries on a new outfit before it hits the hip hop catalog.

We have a small but important rule here at The Line Up: every sample garment that leaves the building MUST be tried on.

Every day at 1pm sharp, you can find our team at Fit Session, where a costume fit model tries on all of our new designs.  Whether its a custom design for a client or new product going up on our store, we like to make sure every pattern is right and fits a REAL body. Putting it on a mannequin is helpful, but a real body is best in order to move and dance in it as intended!

This leads to one very unique job at The Line Up: a Fit Model.  These ladies are our real life, size small mannequins, and often get poked and prodded as they test out all our sample garments.

We sat down with Pam and Taylor, our past and present fit models, for our new employee spotlight series. Check out what they had to say about their highly unusual but very important job!

Looks We Love: NFL Cheerleaders' Bold Color Rush Uniforms!

Posted by Trista on Dec 20, 2016

Seattle sea gals color rush uniform

The NFL is changing their look and feel with Color Rush this year.  For special games, NFL teams will forgo the traditional white road uniforms and wear color uniforms designed specifically for the Color Rush promotion. The new digs are primarily one solid color, with color accents.  The result is a bold color versus color match up!

The Color Rush concept began in 2015, with only 4 special promotion games.  In 2016 it's become a requirement for all teams during Thursday Night football games.

NFL Cheerleaders are getting into the action as well, with matching color rush uniforms of their own.  Check out a few of our friends on the sidelines, and their bold new looks!

Broncos Juniors Cheerleaders

Could you imagine cheering on an NFL football field, performing in front of a stadium full of thousands of on-lookers?!  This is an every-week occurance for many of our pro cheerleader friends, but many young girls get the same opportunity once a year, through Junior Cheerleading programs.  Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Many NFL Cheerleading teams offer Junior Cheerleader programs; where young girls, usually age 4-15, can learn dance fundamentals directly from the pros!  It's a fun and non-competitive program that fosters commitment and self-esteem, and improves talent.  The girls typically participate in a series of clinics, ending in an on-field performance with their mentoring Cheerleaders.

And did we mention they get their own professional uniforms, usually styled after their Big Sister's outfits?  Check out the fabulous looks some of the Junior Cheerleaders have been sporting this season!

How Many Lives Can Your Costume Live?

Posted by Trista on Jul 18, 2016

St. Thomas Custom Jazz Costume 2014

How many lives can your dance or skate costume live?  Plenty, if you play it right!  Wearing the same costume 2 years in a row is an excellent way to save money, but have you ever thought of selling your team's digs to another group?

The University of St. Thomas Dance Team (USTDT) did just that with their 2013-2014 jazz costume, which then went on to be sold again!  After wearing their Jazz costume at UDA Nationals, USTDT sold thier costume to Chaska Dance Team who wore it for a year.  Then, Chaska passed it on to Duluth Denefeld Dance Team, who became the third team to wear this trend setting outfit, taking it all the way to the Minnesota State Dance Team Championships in 2016.  What a testiment to quality and conservation (though we don't really want to get a whiff of those babies!).

Your Complete Guide to the USFSA Synchronized Skating Costume Guidelines

Posted by Trista on Jul 13, 2016

Synchronized skate dresses with rhinestones

Hockettes Junior (left)  and Team Delaware Junior (right) teams went all out on rhinestones for their custom skate dresses - something only Junior, Senior, and Collegiate teams can do!

Last November 2015, the USFSA updated the official Synchronized Skating costume guidelines.  If you’ve taken a look at the guidelines, you know that they tend to be vague.  For good reason too - it allows for artistic interpretations by teams based on their region and performance choices.   Here's guiding principle:

"The costumes of the competitors must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition, not garish or theatrical in design. Costumes may, however, reflect character of the music chosen."
We know with this vague statement, other guiding rules can get a bit confusing, especially since Junior, Senior, and Collegiate levels are excluded from many. So as you start to design for your next synchronized skating dress, here's a look at a few different costume elements, and what the guidelines dictate about each!

What if this was your first dance performance? I saw these costumes on the rack, ready to be packed up, and I couldn't help but be a little envious the new MVC Junior cheerleaders and their new dance season ahead. It definitely does not compare to memories of my first dance costume, an oversized t-shirt trimmed with a pink sequin cinch (hello early 90’s)! The Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders' Director, Tami, told us her daughter loved her Junior MVC dress so much that she did not want to take it off, and even slept in it!
